..thanks to whatbird.com i was able to figure out what this was.. this image above was taken shortly after getting home for lunch when wifey pointed out a weird looking bird perched in the middle of the lake for hours.. this image below was taken by wifey..

..i guess i surprised him, he does look petrified.. 😀

It is native to the nations of North America and many island nations and has been seen in various countries throughout Europe. This bird prefers wetlands and neritic or coastal marine ecosystems. The global population of this bird is estimated to be 1,100,000 to 2,200,000 individuals and it does not appear to meet population decline criteria that would necessitate inclusion on the IUCN Red List.
